Board Features Summary
(General Overview) (Software Features Summary)

There are 2 main Function Modules that control your hardware elements, and a Master Module that provides the communications with your PC. Below follows a brief summary of the allowed connection types for each board, and the key features of the board that we feel makes the SIM-board range an excellent choice for your cockpit project:

SIM-board USB Input Module

  • allows for the control of up to 128 switches and 8 potentiometers, with the option of controlling up to 16 encoders as well by sacrificing switch nodes

For Switches:
  • fast detection of change of state
  • software control assignments can be made to execute when the connection is switched "on", "off" or when the connection changes state ("off to on" or "on to off")
  • software autodetection of switch node number allows easy debugging and control assignment
  • software control of state invert option per node in case of wiring terminals the wrong way round to that desired

For Rotary Encoders:
  • allows up to 16 rotary encoders to be connected
  • supports both mechanical and 5-volt optical rotary encoders
  • supports standard detented types (physical notches per click) or smooth non-detented types (no physical clicks)
  • supports quarter-wave, half-wave and full-wave encoder types (we recommend use of quarter-wave types for best results)
  • supports and tested with real commercial aircraft encoder types
  • software control of slow-slew and fast-slew for artifical value acceleration when encoder is twisted fast
  • software controlled configuration per node for slew rates, debounce and state inversion as require

For Potentiometers:
  • allows up to 8 potentiometers (variable resistors) to be connected
  • supports any resistance value of potentiometer
  • supports both rotary and linear types
  • software support of sample rate and trigger level, anti-jigger controls
  • software control of value invert option per node in case of wiring terminals the wrong way round to that desired

SIM-board USB Output Module

  • allows upto 128 multiplexed outputs to be connected (typically LEDs), or up to 32 direct drive outputs (typically relays)
  • allows up to 16 7-segment displays to be connected
  • wide operating voltage when driving any type of display, from 5V to 30V DC - simply plug in the voltage you want to use for your chosen output device
  • fast change-of-state ability
  • each node and each digit is individually configurable and dimmable by software control from 0 to 100% brightness in 1% steps
  • brightness level adjusted by software control allows the voltage at the output terminals to be adjusted to allow dimming of LEDs and lamps, for example
  • accepts common-cathode or common-anode digit types, with polarity selectable in control software and changeable at any time
  • multiplexed nodes reduce the demand on external power supplies and saves energy (eg. LEDs and 7-segment displays), while direct drive nodes provide constant power to drive hardware that demands steady power (eg. relays)
  • software control of common number and letter segment configurations, re-assignable on a per-project basis in software
  • software control of individual segments per digit for special effects
  • "maxi flex" board can be dynamically changed between multiplexed LED control, 7-segment digit control, and direct drive node control.

SIM-board USB Master Module

  • provides the link between your PC and several function modules
  • only uses one PC USB port for driving the entire chain of function modules
  • only one Master Module is required to create a chain
  • you must have a Master Module to use SIM-boards USB function modules
  • Master Module provides no input/output node functionality

All boards in the SIM-board USB range accept connection of your hardware via pin headers on the board. Connection of your hardware items to the boards can be performed by crimping the ends of the wires connected to your hardware with a simple metal crimp that secures onto the headers (crimps, plastic insulating houses and crimping tool sold separately on this website). You can also choose to wire up using 8x2 ribbon cable connections if desired. It is recommended in this case that you study the Handy Connection Guides available in our Support section for the layout of the pins available on the boards.
